Class 1M News 2/1 to 2/14/11

We have had a really busy and fun filled first two weeks of February! The children had a great time at Family Night. They really enjoyed participating in the various Healthy Choices activities. Here are a few photos of some of the children in First Grade participating in various activities with their friends and families.

Today we had a blast at the Valentine's Day dance. The children had fun dancing with their friends and later on exchanging valentines. Here are some pictures of the dance below.

Tomorrow is our trip to see Seussical! It should be a wonderful musical. We have read Horton Hears a Who!, Horton Hatches the Egg, and Gertrude McFuzz. The show is based on these three books. The children loved hearing these stories and we discussed the stories and the lessons that we learned from them. We will continue with Dr. Seuss for the next couple of weeks.


The children have been having an enchanting time reading various versions of The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We have been identifying the characters, setting, magical elements, problem, solution, and the climax of the stories. We have also been comparing/contrasting different versions of the fairy tales. We have been learning how to use quotation marks to help us read with the proper expression. The children have been practicing this skill in Reader's Theater. Every week there is a new fairy tale in Reader's Theater. This week they will use puppets and make up their own mixed up fairy tales and present them to the class.

In Writing, we have been writing our own versions of The Three Little Pigs. The children are including all of the elements of a fairy tale into their versions.


In Math, we have been working on Place Value. The children used Base 10 Blocks to help them learn this concept. We learned how to trade ones for tens and tens for hundreds. We played Race to 100, The Closest Number, Junk Math, and we stamped the blocks too. Ask your child about these fun games that we played in class.

The children came up with their own definitions of what Love Is...  Read them below. They are wonderful!

 * Masoma:     "Love is happiness.Love is being with your family." :Love is happiness in your heart."

*  Rose :          " Love is when your parents care about you a lot and when you love your family."
                      "Love is when you get a big hug and a big kiss!"

*  Jeni Lynn:    "Love is when you get a cupcake from your sister."

*  Peter:          " Love is when I got a gift for my brother and it was because I loved him."

*  Saniya:        " Love is when I got my puppy and I was excited and I could not let go of my
                          excitement!"

*  Nate:           " Love is when you get lots of hugs and kisses and love is when you are with your
                         family members."

* Julian:            " Love is more than like.Much more. Holding hands and more."

* Ananya:         " Love is holidays and cheerful noise."

*  Shankari:      " Love is when people give you presents and you feel thankful for that friend."

* Tenajah:        " Love is a thing that cares about you and it can be made up in a song."



Ananya read Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy to the class. It was a wonderful treat!
