Class 1M News December 2010

Class 1M is getting into the holiday spirit. We have been learning about different holidays in December. We have been discussing and writing about our own special holiday traditions. We also have been busy practicing for the Lower School Holiday Concert.

We had a wonderful Holiday Party thanks to our spectacular class mom, Mrs. Rappold. Thanks so much for always making our holiday parties so special and lots of fun! Santa even stopped by!

A surprise visit from Santa!

In Reading/Language Arts we have been working on identifying the main idea and details of a story. We read various non-fiction books and magazine articles about animals and how they get ready for the winter. Then we identified the main idea and details. We also started learn about the elements of a non-fiction book, such as the index, glossary, and table of contents, and captions. We also worked on long a and long i. We sang a fun song about long a, which was called Pancake Jake.We have been working on verbs, nouns, and homophones. We continue to work on reading fluently. For the past two weeks the children have been reading different pretend news scripts and reading them aloud to an audience of their peers. I posted some pictures for you to take a peek at!

We have finished publishing our books. We will have our Publishing Party in January. The children worked really hard on their books and I hope that you will be able to attend. We have a special visitor in our room named Snowy! He inspired us to write Help Wanted ads for elves. First we brainstormed a list of possible jobs Santa's elves would do and then we chose a job and created a Help Wanted ad. Then we made elves to go along with our writing pieces. I posted some pictures of their writing. Their ads were priceless!

In Math we have been working on addition and subtraction to 18. We have been using a number grid and Input/Output machines to add. We worked on choosing the correct operation in a number problem. We read the book Imogene's Antlers by David Adler. Then we wrote word problems based on the story. The children had a blast!

In Science we have been busy learning about how people and animals get ready for the winter. We learned that animals migrate, hibernate, or hide and a few do all three! We read and discussed where different animals hibernate and where they go when they migrate. We have been integrating this theme in both writing and reading as well as math. We will continue with this theme in January and will focus on bears. Stay tuned for details about the Teddy Bear Sleepover!

I hope that everyone has a wonderful winter break! Happy Holidays and have a happy and healthy New Year!
