Class 1M News May 26, 2011
We have had a very exciting and fun filled week in First Grade! On Wednesday we had an adventure filled safari themed end of the year party! The children were decked out in safari hats, binoculars, and walked into a room decorated to look like the jungle. We had a fun scavenger hunt, played some fun jungle animal games outside, did a craft, and had a picnic lunch. Then we headed out to the playground where the ice cram truck stopped by and we all had ice cream!!The children had an awesome day. Thanks soooooo much to Mrs. Rappold for all of her creativity and hard work and for making the day a special day that the children will always remember!
Here are some pictures from our party!! Enjoy!
We finished our Poetry unit. The children read and wrote many different kinds of poems. We wrote list poems, shape poems, free verse, acrostic, and color poems. Each child published their poems in a Poetry book, which will be sent home this week. We also created a poetry anthology with class 1J and each child selected their favorite poem to go in the book. They did a fabulous job!
The LS Spring Concert was spectacular. The children did a fabulous job! It warms my heart to hear them sing!
The LS Art Show was wonderful. The children created so many beautiful masterpieces with Mrs. Howard. Here are a few photos...
In Science and Reading we have been working on our animal habitat unit. We learned all about the desert and the plants and animals that live there. The children made a desert mural and we read many interesting books about the desert. One great book we read was The Cactus Hotel. The children did a fun activity where they had to draw a cactus and then draw all of the animals that live in a cactus. We have also been working on our last habitat, oceans. We learned why the ocean is salty, where sand comes from, and all about the fish and sea creatures that live in our oceans. We also learned the difference between a fish and a whale. We will continue our oceans study next week.
In Math we finished time and are finishing up our money unit. We have been counting various combinations of pennies, nickels, dimes, and we started quarters.
In Writing we are working on 1st Grade memory books. We also wrote a how to piece about how to blow a bubble and we even got to practice by chewing gum!!!
Today we took part in Field Day! The children had a really fun day! They got to participate in relay races, Jump the River, Home Run Derby, sack races, Water Relay, and soccer dribbles. Our team was Team Canada. I was so happy to see so many parents come and cheer for their children. I am going to send a smilebox with the Field Day pictures.
Enjoy the long weekend.

Class 1M News April 15, 2011
We have had a very busy past two weeks in Class 1M! We had a Fairy Tale Reading with the Fourth Grade in the library. The children read fairy tales to the Fourth Graders. Then they had some enchanting snacks that were made by our magical class mom, Mrs. Rappold. We have finished our fairy tale stories and we will have the Fairy Tale Publishing Party on Wednesday, 5/4 at 9:30 am. Here are some pictures from the Fairy Tale Reading.
We have started to learn all about habitats and the animal kingdom. We have been learning about the woodlands and we went on a fabulous trip to Kateri. The children went on a scavenger hunt/ hike, created homes for woodland animals, learned about various plants and animals that live in the woods, and acted out a story and even did a fun craft. I sent a smilebox with a slideshow of the trip to everyone.
This week the children received their own pet mealworms. We created a safe home for them and gave them oatmeal and an apple. The children named them and observe them every day. They did a few fun experiments with their mealworms. Ask them to tell you all about it!
April is National Poetry Month. The children have been reading and writing many different kinds of poems. They typed Diamante poems on the computer about caterpillars. We also wrote shape poems and color poems. The children really enjoy writing poems!
In Math, we finished up our Fractions unit. The children played Fraction Pizza, Fraction Dominoes, Made Playdough fraction pizzas, and made fractionpillars. This week we started measurement. We used non-standard units and inches to measure various objects.
We learned how to sew a running stitch. The children were so eager to learn how to sew. They did a wonderful job. We learned how quilts are made and we made paper quilts in Math. We read The Quiltmaker's Gift, The Keeping Quilt, and Tar Beach. Then we made our own story quilts.
In Reading, we have been working in Literature Circles. Each child has a role/job to do and then we read the chapter and each child does his part. Then the Literature Circle discusses the book and each child does his/her part. We also worked on having a meaningful book talk. We also worked on making inferences about characters.
Have a great weekend!

Class 1M News 2/23 to 3/7/11
We have been so busy these past few weeks. We have been reading many different fairy tales and doing many fun fairy tale related activities. We have read different versions of Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, and The Princess and the Pea. We worked on identifying story elements and the rising and falling action of a story. We also compared and contrasted different characters and different stories. The children made a huge castle in the classroom. We have been working using quotation marks to read with expression. The children have also been writing sentences using quotation marks. They designed their own giants and using quotation marks they wrote what they think he/she would say. We also have been working on contractions and inflectional endings.
In Writing, we began to write our own fairy tales. Each child came up with their story topic and wrote an enchanting beginning, which included introducing the main characters and the setting as well as the problem.
The children also have been writing and acting out their own fairy tales in Puppet Theater during Literacy Centers.
We went our trip to see Seussical. It was a wonderful musical and the children really enjoyed it.Look at some pictures of the trip below.
We also celebrated the 100th Day of School. The children made 100th Day books, read a poem with 100 words, and played games involving the number 100 in Math. They did a wonderful job presenting their 100th Day of School book projects. Check out their projects below.
The children are having a blast learning about penguins. We have been reading and writing about penguins for the past week or so. Ask your child to tell you about some of the interesting things that they have learned.
Peter was our Student of the Week and he read his favorite book to the class. Mrs. Rappold came in to do a special presentation about Peter and talked to us about Guatemala. It was lovely.
Thursday, 3/10 is our trip to Jenkinson's Aquarium. The children need to bring a brown bag lunch with their name on it. They can come dressed down in black and white in honor of the penguins. It is an all day trip. We will return to school between 2 and 2:30.
A farmer delivered some chicken eggs to Mrs. Meier's science lab. Here are some pictures...
Friday is the 1st and 4th Grade Mini-Musical, Red Riding Hood. It will be at 1:45 in the All Purpose room. I hope you all will be able to come and see it. The children have been working really hard on it.
Have a great week!!!
